Influencers and SARS

Social influencers are a new generation of entrepreneurs, typically operating as sole proprietors or independent contractors. They are technologically skilled individuals who have identified market niches and built businesses around their social media following.

While this segment has unique characteristics, it is subject to the same tax obligations as any other. Income earned must be declared and taxed, just as with freelance work. Social influencers are encouraged to disclose earnings from brand partnerships, sponsored content, and affiliate marketing—whether compensation is received in cash, products, or services.

By doing so, these individuals, like all taxpayers, play an important role in supporting the country’s economic health and strengthening its democracy.

It explained that the social media influencer segment comprises modern entrepreneurs who can be classified as sole proprietors or independent contractors.

Lebese explained that a social media influencer who is offered a free meal in exchange for posting about the restaurant should declare the value of that meal.

“Unfortunately, yes, you have to,” he responded to a question about that very scenario.

“Most of these influencers don’t have that information or education. They don’t have any tax knowledge. So yes, you need to declare this value in kind benefits. They form part of your gross income.”

Keep a record of all income and expenses

  • Keep personal and business expenses separate by using a dedicated business bank account.
  • Set aside money for taxes.
  • Do monthly bookkeeping to track income, expenses, and cash flow.
  • Compile a personal budget to determine your monthly expenses.

Influencers can have multiple income sources,  even gifted items may count as taxable income if given in exchange for promotion or content. So it’s essential to know their market value and keep records of everything you receive.

Create a system that can manage invoices and expenses with ease. It helps to log receipts, track business expenses, and manage payments – essential to stay organised and avoid missing out on valuable deductions.

A budget is a written plan for how you’ll spend your money each month, showing your income and spending.

Treat your content as a business.
