2019 Tax Season

Tax season 2019 officially started on Monday July 1 for South African taxpayers who use Filing and the SARS MobiApp. The revenue collection agency also announced it had implemented enhancements and changes for the season. However, this does not mean that all taxpayers who pay tax are required to submit an income tax return.  Click here to read who does not need to fill in a tax return.  If you suspect that you qualify for a refund then you need to complete the tax return.

Important information

Non-provisional taxpayers who use SARS eFiling and the SARS MobiApp will have a longer period to file their returns.  “The deadline is the  4th of December,” said SARS.

The reason for the staggered approach to Tax Season 2019 is to encourage taxpayers to use the two digital channels.  Theses two channels are SARS eFiling and the SARS MobiApp. Both are available 24/7 and offer enhanced features and removes the need to queue at a SARS branch.

The closing date for filing personal income tax returns are October 31 for provisional and non-provisional taxpayers who file at a branch; December 4 for non-provisional taxpayers who use eFiling or the Sars MobiApp; and January 31 for provisional taxpayers who use eFiling.

When filing your annual return you need to have the necessary supporting documents, including your banking details;

IRP5/IT3(a) certificate(s);

Certificates [IT3(b)] that you received for any investment income;

Medical aid certificate(s) for details of medical aid contributions made that do not appear on your IRP5/IT3(a) certificate(s);

Retirement annuity contribution certificates;

Details of business travel and information about foreign tax credits withheld.

Other relevant documents include completed confirmation of diagnosis of disability form (ITR-DD), if applicable; and financial statements, if applicable for business income.
